Sarracenia Maroon — Ø12 cm — H23 cm
🌿 Spectacular purple pitchers • ☀️ Bright direct light • 💧 Always moist substrate • 🦟 Fascinating carnivorous plant
The Sarracenia Maroon is a spectacular carnivorous plant, known for its elegant purple pitchers that naturally trap insects. This variety of sarracenia features upright tubular traps with deep brown-purple hues that create a striking visual effect in your urban jungle.
Native to the peat bogs of North America, this fascinating carnivorous plant has developed a unique trapping system: its pitchers produce an attractive nectar that lures insects inside, where they are digested to provide essential nutrients. With its current height of 23 cm and pot diameter of 12 cm, it becomes a captivating conversation piece in your urban jungle, perfect for collectors and enthusiasts seeking an authentic and easy-care carnivorous plant.
Exposure & Location
The Sarracenia Maroon requires bright light, ideally with a few hours of direct sunlight, to develop its intense purple tones and maintain vigorous growth.
- Exposure: bright light to direct sun (ideally 4-6 hours per day).
- Ideal: sunny windowsill, conservatory, balcony, or terrace during warm seasons.
- Temperature: 15 to 30 °C during the growing season; tolerates winter cold (down to -5 °C during dormancy).
- Substrate: poor, acidic, and very moist (mix of blonde peat + perlite or non-calcareous sand).
Verdeia tip: the more direct light it receives, the deeper and more spectacular its purple pitchers will develop.
Watering & Care
- Watering: abundant; the substrate must remain constantly moist, never dry.
- Water: use exclusively rainwater, demineralized or reverse osmosis water — never calcareous tap water.
- Method: place the pot in a saucer with 2-3 cm of water permanently.
- Humidity: prefers 50-70% ambient humidity.
- Fertilizer: none — the plant feeds on naturally captured insects.
- Winter rest: reduce watering in winter; the plant enters dormancy (pitchers may brown, this is normal).
Never feed your Sarracenia with meat or dead insects — it captures what it needs naturally.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
With its fascinating purple pitchers and carnivorous plant status, the Sarracenia Maroon instantly becomes a captivating conversation piece. It deserves a bright spot where its spectacular traps can be admired up close.
- To pair with: Dionaea (Venus flytrap), Drosera (sundews), Nepenthes (tropical pitcher plant) to create a varied carnivorous collection.
- Ideal pot: non-drilled plastic pot or waterproof decorative pot to maintain constant humidity.
- Urban jungle vibe: perfect on a sunny windowsill, in an open terrarium, or in a corner of unusual plant collections.
Place it in a bright, visible spot to watch insects get captured — it’s a fascinating natural show.
Verdeia Tips
- Use only non-calcareous water — tap water can kill the plant.
- Never cut green pitchers — they are functional even if they look dry at the tips.
- Let it catch its own insects — it needs no additional nutrients.
- Respect its winter dormancy period — this is essential for its long-term health.
- Repot every 2-3 years in spring into fresh carnivorous plant substrate.
- Avoid touching the inside of the pitchers — this can damage the digestive glands.
