Rhipsalis Red Coral — Coral cactus — Ø17 cm — H25 cm
🌿 Thin trailing red-orange stems • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌵 Spineless epiphytic cactus • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Rhipsalis Red Coral, also called Coral cactus, is a spectacular and graphic epiphytic cactus, known for its thin cylindrical trailing stems in red-orange hues that evoke the branches of coral. This fascinating variety features branched succulent stems without spines that create an elegant and colorful plant cascade, completely different from traditional cacti.
Native to the humid tropical forests of South America (Brazil, Argentina), Rhipsalis naturally grows as an epiphytic plant on tree branches in shaded understories where it develops its characteristic trailing stems. Unlike desert cacti, it has no spines and enjoys humidity and partial shade. Its thin red-orange stems create a unique and airy visual effect. With its current height of 25 cm and pot diameter of 17 cm, it becomes a graphic and colorful trailing plant in your urban jungle, perfect for hanging, a high shelf, or a furniture edge where its stems can cascade freely.
Exposure & Location
The Rhipsalis Red Coral prefers bright indirect light to partial shade. Unlike desert cacti, it avoids harsh direct sunlight that can fade its stems.
- Exposure: bright indirect light to bright partial shade.
- Ideal: hanging near a window, high shelf, bright bathroom, or furniture edge.
- Temperature: 15 to 25 °C, without sudden fluctuations.
- Substrate: light and well-draining, special for epiphytic cacti (orchid soil + perlite + bark).
Verdeia tip: good brightness intensifies the spectacular red-orange hues of the stems.
Watering & Care
- Watering: moderate; allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, reduce in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and very draining substrate.
- Humidity: prefers 50-60% humidity, mist occasionally.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with diluted liquid fertilizer for cacti.
- Winter rest: reduce watering in autumn-winter.
Unlike desert cacti, Rhipsalis appreciates more regular watering as it comes from humid tropical forests.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
With its thin trailing red-orange stems and coral-like appearance, the Rhipsalis Red Coral adds a graphic and colorful touch to your urban jungle. It creates a spectacular cascading effect.
- To combine with: other Rhipsalis, Hoya (waxy foliage), Dischidia, Epipremnum, or trailing plants to create a varied hanging jungle.
- Ideal pot: macramé hanger, suspended decorative pot in white ceramic or terracotta to highlight the colorful stems.
- Ambiance: perfect hanging near a window, on a high shelf, bright bathroom, or furniture edge.
Place it high to fully enjoy the cascading effect of its colorful trailing stems.
Verdeia Tips
- Very easy to care for — perfect for beginners.
- Avoid direct sunlight that can fade the red-orange stems.
- Water more regularly than a desert cactus — it is a tropical forest cactus.
- Mist occasionally to recreate tropical forest humidity.
- Repot every 2-3 years in spring with fresh, airy substrate.
- Very easy to propagate — cut a stem and plant it in moist substrate.
- Moderate growth — stems lengthen gradually.
- Non-toxic — safe for children and pets.
- May produce small white or cream flowers followed by translucent berries.
