Drosera aliciae — Carnivorous plant
🪴 Graphic carnivorous plant • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Regular watering • 🌿 Moderate care
The Drosera aliciae, also called Cape sundew, is a fascinating small carnivorous plant native to South Africa. Its foliage forms a compact rosette covered with fine shiny droplets that naturally trap insects.
Both decorative and surprising, it fits perfectly in a bright interior or on a well-lit windowsill. An ideal plant for the curious and lovers of unusual nature.
Exposure & placement
The Drosera aliciae loves light and warmth, without direct burning sun. It thrives in a bright and humid atmosphere, close to its natural habitat.
- Exposure: bright indirect light, gentle morning or late afternoon sun.
- Ideal: east or southeast-facing windowsill, bright terrarium or indoor greenhouse.
- Temperature: 18–28 °C in summer, never below 10 °C.
- Substrate: special carnivorous plant mix (blond peat and sand or perlite, without fertilizer).
Verdeia tip: always keep some water in the saucer, especially in summer, to keep the substrate moist without ever soaking it.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering: regular: the substrate must remain constantly moist.
- Water: use only rainwater, demineralized or osmosis water.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary — the plant gets its nutrients from captured insects.
- Winter: resting period: slightly reduce watering and keep in a cool, bright room.
- Care: remove dry leaves at the base to keep a compact rosette.
Do not feed the plant manually: it naturally attracts small insects thanks to its sticky leaves.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Compact and original, the Drosera aliciae adds a touch of botanical curiosity to a modern interior. Its pink and sparkling foliage creates a unique graphic effect.
- To pair with: Nepenthes or Dionaea muscipula for a complete mini carnivorous garden.
- Ideal pot: plastic or ceramic pot with saucer, to keep humidity constant.
- Ambiance: perfect in a terrarium or a bright shelf.
Place it near a natural light source to make its sticky droplets shine — this is where it reveals all its beauty.
Verdeia tips
- Give it bright light without burning sun.
- Water only with non-calcareous water.
- Keep a water level in the saucer, especially in summer.
- Never put fertilizer in the substrate.
- Promotes a humid atmosphere, for example by placing damp clay pellets around the pot.
