🌿 Carnivorous plant • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Regular watering • 🪴 Moderate care
The Dionaea muscipula, better known as the Venus Flytrap, is one of the most fascinating carnivorous plants. Delivered in a Ø12 cm pot with a height of about 12 cm, it is perfect for terrariums, indoor mini-gardens, or urban spaces where you want to add a unique botanical touch.
Thanks to its iconic trapping mechanism, made of trap-shaped leaves, the Dionaea intrigues as much as it decorates. Easy to maintain if its specific needs are respected, it is ideal for the curious, motivated beginners, or enthusiasts of unusual plants.
Exposure & placement
The Dionaea muscipula enjoys bright but indirect light. It can tolerate a few hours of gentle sun, but prefers a semi-shaded exposure, reminiscent of its natural moist and open habitats.
- Exposure: bright indirect light or partial shade.
- Ideal: bright terrarium, east or north windowsill, well-lit office.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C during the growing period.
- Substrate: special carnivorous plant mix (peat & sand), without fertilizer.
Verdeia tip: give it a very bright spot without burning sun to stimulate the red coloration of its traps.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering: regular, keeping the substrate moist but never soggy.
- Water: exclusively demineralized, distilled, or rainwater.
- Winter rest: it goes dormant in winter; reduce watering and keep it cool.
- Food: do not add insects yourself: it captures what it needs.
- Handling: avoid triggering its traps unnecessarily to prevent exhaustion.
In warm periods, place a water saucer under its pot to ensure constant humidity — but remove it in winter.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The Venus Flytrap is an impressive decorative plant, perfect for creating a focal point in a modern interior or an original botanical corner. It brings a playful and scientific touch to an urban space.
- To pair with: Sarracenia, Drosera, or Nepenthes for a mini carnivorous garden.
- Ideal pot: white ceramic or light stoneware to highlight its bright colors.
- Atmosphere: ideal in a glass terrarium, a bright shelf, or a creative desk.
Place it in a transparent container to admire the unique structure of its traps and create a mini humid landscape.
Verdeia tips
- Use only low-mineral water to avoid damaging its sensitive roots.
- Give it bright light without burning sun to keep the traps colorful and vigorous.
- Never stimulate the traps with your fingers: each closure requires a lot of energy.
- Place it ideally in an open terrarium to maintain good humidity.
- Respects its natural cycle with a winter rest to ensure its longevity.
